Judges’ Biographies

Burt Ballou – Fullerton, CA

Burt

Year Certified 1997: Burt has judged koi shows across the USA as head judge, asst head judge, asst judge and candidate judge.

Years in Hobby: 42 years

Affiliated Club and how many years: Burt is in the ZNA Orange County and So Cal koi clubs, and ZNA SO Cal club

Positions held in clubs: Past president & VP of So Cal, been koi show chair several times.

Accomplishments and other koi related activities: Burt is the person responsible for the creation of the AKCA judging program and creator of the “Pond Construction, Filter, Health and Nutrition” guides. He was past features editor for Koi USA for over 9 years and AKCA chairman 3 times. He handles AKCA’s Koi Person of the year awards and the “speaker grants” program for AKCA. Burt is a Koi Health Advisor (KHA) instructor of the “pond design” section that is sponsored by AKCA and handles the insurance for AKCA. He has been a speaker at several AKCA seminars, PNKCA seminars, speaker at numerous koi clubs in California, Texas, and Illinois and over 50 koi shows throughout the U.S. on various subjects including pond construction, filter construction and design, koi appreciation and how to pick young koi. He has designed and/or built over 350 koi ponds, fiberglass, cement, gunite, liner, and cinderblock. Attended All Japan Show in ’91 and has been on koi buying trips to Japan in ’00, 02 Burt has three ponds: 750 gal, 3,800 gal, 22,250 gal and about 100+ koi including his first koi.

Bryan Bateman - Clarendon Hills, Illinois

Bryan

Year Certified 2005: Bryan has judged in 33 shows throughout the U.S. and abroad, including the 14th annual “Dutch Koi Days” show in Arcen, Holland in 2006. He was appointed as a member of the AKCA Judging Committee in 2009.

Years in Hobby: 21

Affiliated Club and how many years: Midwest Pond and Koi Society for 14 years. Also belong to Northern Midwest ZNA, Greater Louisville Koi and Goldfish Society, and Mid-Atlantic Koi Club.

Positions held in clubs: Past President Midwest Pond and Koi Society, Board of Directors and AKCA club rep - past 10 years, Koi Show chairman past 9 years.

Accomplishments and other koi related activities: Bryan enjoys writing articles for Koi USA , Mid Atlantic Koi magazine, Midwest Pond and Koi Society Newsletter, and others. He has given presentations at the annual AKCA seminar, and speaks on various topics to Koi clubs throughout the Midwest and East coast. Bryan is a Certified Koi Health Advisor, and has served on both the AKCA Project KHV Fundraising committee and the KHA steering committee. Bryan has been three times Midwest Pond and Koi Society Koi Person of the Year. He and his wife Bay enjoy showing throughout the Midwest and East, and have been honored to win seven Grand Champions, as well as Club Koi of the Year on 12 occasions, including a second place AKCA Koi of the Year in 2006 and first place in 2009.

Larry Gill – San Leandro, CA

Larry

Year Certified 1999: Larry entered the judging program in 1995 and has judges several shows in the U.S. Holland and England.

Years in Hobby: 38 years

Affiliated Club and how many years: San Francisco Bay Area Koi club - 5 years vice pres/showchair. ZNA so Cal 5 years, Camellia koi club 5 years, ZNA Orange 3 years, ZNA Nor Cal Koi Club

Positions held in clubs: President, Vice President, show chair and program director.

Accomplishments and Other koi related Activities: Larry has been a club speaker several times and has made 3 trips to Japan. He has won best young, best baby and Tagagoi awards and was koi person of the year in 1995 and 2008.

Charles Phelps - Louisville, KY

Charles

Year Certified 1997: Charles has judged in about 20 Shows in the US and abroad since being certified

Years in Hobby: 17

Affiliated Clubs: Greater Louisville Koi & Goldfish Society 15 years, also member of Mid-Atlantic Koi Club, Midwest Koi & Pond Society, and Northern Midwest ZNA

Positions held in clubs: Two terms as President, three times Show Chairman, current Treasurer and AKCA Rep., Co- Chairman of AKCA Seminar

Accomplishments and Other koi related Activities: Charles has written articles for club newsletters and AKCA, and has given talks at Koi Shows, Seminars and taught classes on Building Koi Ponds and Koi Keeping at local High Schools. He was voted Koi Person of the Year in 1992 and has won several Grand Champion Awards and other Major Awards across the country. Charles attended All-Japan Koi Show in 1996

Jan Thompson – Pueblo West, CO

Joined judging program:  2006

Years in Hobby:  Since 1996

Affiliated Club and how many years:  ROCKY MOUNTAIN KOI CLUB, Denver, CO. Member since 1997. Also belong to Oklahoma City and Phoenix,AZ AKCA Clubs. Member of ZNA

Accomplishments and other koi related activities: Jan has traveled together with her husband to shows in California, Oklahoma, Arizona, Illinois and Florida taking koi to all but Florida and California. In 2003 traveled to Japan to learn koi culture in Niigata area. Traveled to England in 2004. Contributor to RMKC Newsletter. Has helped bench koi and has been a judging scribe at several koi shows around the country. Various awards have been; 1997 RMKC Tategoi award, 2001 RMKC Baby Champion, Young Champion in 2004 at both the Valley of the Sun Koi Show and Midwest Pond and Koi Society Show in Chicago, Mature Champion at Valley of the Sun Koi Show in 2004, and Reserve Grand Champion 2005 RMKC Show.

Joe White – Port Orange, FL

JoeYear Certified 2004: Joe has participated in judge seminars since the first presentation by the Judge Committee in 1994 at the AKCA Seminar held in Baltimore. Entered the program as a Candidate Judge in 2001; he is in the Judge Class of 2004. Joe has judged shows in Holland and Brazil.

Years in Hobby: 16 years.

Affiliated Club and how many years: Joe joined the Central Florida Koi Club in 1994. He is a founding officer of the Florida East Coast club beginning in 1998 and is a founding officer of the ZNA Southern Koi Association in 2003.

Positions held in clubs: President, Vice President, Newsletter Editor and Web Master. Currently he is the AKCA director for FLECKA He has been koi show chairman and co chairman for shows in the central Florida and has assisted with water quality for shows throughout eastern USA.

Accomplishments and Other koi related Activities: Joe has given several talks on water quality and filtration at show seminars and has appeared on television and radio shows several times. Joe got into website design in 2005 and has helped Florida clubs put up their websites. He has worked on the AKCA Project KHV website and has managed the KOIUSA Web site for several years. Joe has visited Japan twice.

Joe’s koi have won Grand Champion, Grand Champion B, and Reserve at shows in Florida. Joe was in the first KHA class and recently served as Chairman for the KHA Steering Committee. Joe has been awarded the AKCA Koi Person of the Year award by four clubs.

Michael Frady – Alexandria, VA

Joined judging program: Entered the AKCA Judging Program in 2008

Years in Hobby:  15 years

Affiliated Club and how many years: ZNA Potomac since 2002, also belong to Mid-Atlantic Koi Club since 2006, and Inland Koi Society since 2006.

Positions held in clubs:  ZNA Potomac, and Koi Show Chair – ZNA Potomac

Accomplishments and other koi related activities: Michael has written articles for newsletters, Chaired Young Koi Auctions, given presentations to civic groups about Koi, and have assisted with benching and other duties at other Koi shows on the East Coast. Michael was Koi Person of the Year – ZNA Potomac 2005 and has received three Baby Grand Champions and one Young Champion, and numerous other recognitions.

Dale Gingerich – Bluff City, TN

DaleJoined judging program: Entered the AKCA Judging Program in 2009

Years in Hobby: Dale first became interested in koi in the mid 1990s with his father's pond in Canada, and has been keeping his own koi since the early 2000s.

Affiliated Club and how many years: Dale is a member of the IKONA Koi Club, the Piedmont Koi and Watergardening Society, and the Midwest Koi and Pond Society. 

Positions held in clubs: Founding member of the IKONA Koi Club, served as first president of IKONA, and is currently the club's webmaster. 

Accomplishments and other koi related activities: Dale has attended koi shows in Charlotte, Atlanta, Louisville, Orlando, Raleigh, Chicago, Potomac, San Diego, and Fresno. He and his wife, Patti, show koi at most shows that they attend when he is not judging.  Dale and Patti both have worked at most of the koi shows they have attended, Dale with the benching team and Patti with the computerized fish registration.  Dale has served as head bencher for several shows. He has been named as the IKONA Koi Person of the Year and has attended several AKCA seminars.  He is also the administrator of Koi Shack, a popular internet koi forum.  Dale and Patti have three children, two grandchildren, a pond full of koi, and a bloodhound named Otis.
